Understanding
fabric GSM.

A practical starting point for apparel buyers.

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It describes the mass of a fabric over a defined area, allowing buyers to compare weight even when widths differ.

Weight is only one part of the picture

Two fabrics with the same GSM can feel quite different. Fibre type, yarn, knit structure, finishing and stretch all influence handle, drape and opacity. A reference sample helps connect a number to the garment you want.

Choosing a target weight

Start with the garment and its intended season, customer and fit. Consider whether you need a lightweight layer, a substantial essential or a warm sweatshirt. Compare samples, then confirm a target and tolerance in your technical specification.

What to include in an enquiry

  • Fabric structure and fibre composition
  • Target GSM and usable width
  • Stretch and dimensional stability requirements
  • Colour, print and finishing needs
  • Estimated quantity and intended garment
