Modal vs Lyocell Fabric: 6 Checks for Wholesale Buyers

Modal vs lyocell fabric: compare a complete article

Modal vs lyocell fabric is a useful comparison for brands, garment factories and importers developing soft-drape knitted apparel. However, the fibre name alone cannot select the best fabric for a collection. A single jersey and an interlock made with the same fibre can behave differently, while blends and finishes introduce further variables.

Start with the intended garment, target handle, opacity and care requirements. Our viscose, modal and lyocell fabric sourcing page provides the enquiry route. Request clearly labelled alternatives and compare them against one written brief, rather than asking for the softest sample without defining how it will be used.

1. Separate fibre identity from the brand name

Modal and lyocell are regenerated cellulosic fibres, but their production routes differ. Lenzing describes modal as a modified viscose process and lyocell as a direct dissolution process in its fibre technology overview. This distinction helps identify the material; it does not replace testing of a finished knit.

A branded fibre requirement is a separate purchasing condition. If your customer requires TENCEL™ Modal or TENCEL™ Lyocell, state that explicitly and ask which supporting fibre identification and brand-use documentation applies. Generic modal or lyocell should not automatically be labelled with a brand name. The ability to discuss a material does not establish licensing for a particular supply chain.

2. Compare modal vs lyocell fabric on equal terms

Give each proposed fabric an article code and request the complete composition. If elastane, cotton or another fibre is included, record every percentage. Select the construction deliberately: a single jersey knit and an interlock knit are separate development options, even when their fibre blends match.

Specification fieldRecord for both alternativesWhy it matters
Fibre identityExact percentages and any required branded fibre.Prevents an undocumented substitution.
ConstructionJersey, interlock or another identified structure.Keeps the comparison tied to a specific material.
Finished dimensionsGSM, usable width and agreed tolerances.Supports garment trials and cost comparison.
Finish and careProposed finishing route and intended care process.Makes the sample approval reproducible.
Commercial basisQuantity per colour, price unit and delivery scope.Makes the offers comparable.

Where those fields differ, decide whether the purpose is an equal-specification material comparison or a choice between different finished products. Both can be useful, but they answer different purchasing questions.

3. Assess drape, opacity and appearance in a garment

For modal vs lyocell fabric, examine how the sample hangs in the actual garment shape. A small swatch does not show the full effect of a longer panel, a neckline or a gathered area. Ask the sample room to use the intended pattern and keep the fabric reference attached to the garment.

Check opacity in the proposed colours and under the expected degree of extension. Compare surface appearance, seam behaviour and handle after the agreed care sequence. A darker swatch or a heavier construction should not be used to approve a lighter colour or a different weight without reviewing the change.

If the product requires measurable air permeability, moisture management or another performance claim, include that in the technical brief and request suitable evidence. Do not infer a numerical result or a guaranteed comfort benefit from the fibre name alone.

4. Specify stretch separately from softness

A soft-draping fabric is not automatically a high-recovery fabric. For close-fitting garments, document the requested extension and recovery behaviour alongside the composition. Where elastane is proposed, approve the finished article through the relevant test and garment trial instead of relying on the percentage alone.

For a looser loungewear silhouette, the priority may be drape and dimensional stability rather than a high extension figure. Tell the supplier how the garment should fit and which parts need to retain their shape. The stretch and recovery explanation in our buying guides can help your team distinguish those measurements, although each material still needs its own specification.

5. Agree the care trial and documentation before approval

Ask the technical team to define the intended wash and drying conditions before assessing dimensional change, pilling or surface appearance. Request that reports identify the article, composition, colour and sample or production lot. A report for another fabric is background information, not automatic approval of the offered article.

For modal vs lyocell fabric sourcing, keep material traceability and product performance as separate approval records. Certification or fibre identification documents answer specific questions about their stated scope; they do not establish every garment performance property. Review any branded-fibre and certification requirements with the supplier before placing the order.

Maintain an approved physical sample and a controlled specification revision. If the finishing route, blend or yarn source changes, decide which approvals need to be repeated. This gives repeat orders a defined reference rather than a memory of how the first sample felt.

6. Build a wholesale fabric enquiry that can be quoted

Send the supplier enough detail to assess both the development and the order:

  • Garment use, reference sample and the required drape or handle.
  • Modal or lyocell identity, full blend percentages and any named fibre brand.
  • Construction, finished GSM, usable width and colour references.
  • Stretch requirements, intended care procedure and relevant tests.
  • Sample lengths or sample-garment needs, with required labels.
  • Confirmed quantity per colour, repeat forecast, destination and delivery window.

Ask for minimum quantities, sample charges and production timing for each proposed alternative. When comparing kilogram and metre prices, align the finished dimensions using our fabric cost comparison guide. For recurring wholesale deliveries, discuss the article list and release schedule through Fago Textile bulk supply enquiries.

Modal vs lyocell fabric: buyer questions

Is modal the same as lyocell?

No. They are distinct fibre identities with different production routes. Keep the chosen identity and any blend percentages explicit in the purchase specification.

Does a lyocell fabric automatically qualify for a TENCEL™ label?

No. A generic fibre description is not proof of branded material or permission to use a brand. Confirm the relevant identification and requirements for the actual supply chain.

Which is better for premium loungewear?

Select the finished fabric that meets your garment brief. Compare labelled samples for drape, opacity, fit and care performance, then evaluate commercial terms on the approved specification.
