Garment fabrics selected for production.

Select garment fabrics by translating the intended fit, appearance and care requirements into a measurable knitted material specification. A garment brief brings together fit, appearance, handle and care requirements. Translate those goals into a construction, fibre composition, finished weight and usable width before comparing fabric offers. For industrial purchases, also define acceptable variation and the sample approvals needed before cutting.

Use the application guides below to compare relevant structures and build your specification. Final suitability depends on the approved fabric sample, finishing and any required testing. Fago Textile supplies fabric enquiries; these pages support material selection for your garment manufacturing process.

Before you confirm your fabric order.

A useful comparison of garment fabrics starts with the same end-use requirements. Ask the designer and production team to identify the properties that influence pattern cutting, sewing and decoration. Then compare constructions and compositions with those priorities in mind. The approved sample should sit alongside finished GSM, usable width and agreed quality criteria.

When sourcing garment fabrics for several styles, show which articles share a body material and which need separate trims or finishes. List the quantity by fabric and shade rather than only by garment count. This helps connect the fabric quotation to the actual production programme and makes repeat purchasing easier to review.

For testing terminology, consult the AATCC testing and standards resources. Agree the actual methods and acceptance criteria for your fabric with the supplier.

Specify garment fabrics from the finished product backwards

Describe the garment category, intended silhouette and the feel you want the finished product to have. A close-fitting T-shirt, a relaxed sweatshirt and a structured polo may require different combinations of composition, knit construction and finishing. A photograph can help explain the look, but a physical swatch or measurable specification gives the development discussion a more useful reference.

Coordinate body fabric and components

List body fabric, rib cuffs, neckbands and other knitted components separately. Explain which components must match in colour and which may use a different construction or weight. Garment fabrics should be reviewed together where they will be joined in production. Include the required wash and recovery checks so the garment team can assess compatibility before committing to bulk quantities.

Prepare quantities for the actual production programme

Separate your requirements by article and colour, then give the intended order unit. If you are starting from garment quantities, explain the consumption assumptions used to estimate the fabric requirement. Allow your production team to review cutting layout, usable width and any sampling allowance. Share the planned release date and delivery destination when requesting a quotation. For repeat collections, identify the first confirmed order independently from the forecast, and retain the approved article details for subsequent purchases.

Review the sample in its intended context

Handle and inspect a representative sample before confirming the order. When possible, ask the garment development team to assess it in a sample garment using the intended pattern and components. Record practical observations against the approved specification. This connects the material decision to garment use and gives the buying team a clearer basis for repeat enquiries.
