Knitted fabric materials for your garment brief.

Choose knitted fabric materials by considering the fibre composition, construction and finish together. The same knit structure can behave differently when its fibre blend, yarn and finish change. Choose a composition around the garment, target handle, opacity, stretch, care requirements and price brief. Then compare physical samples and agree the finished specification before ordering.

The material pages below explain the information we need to evaluate your project. Blend ratios, yarn availability, certified sourcing and production suitability are confirmed for each quotation. A fibre name alone does not establish the performance or certification of a finished fabric.

Compare material routes.

Before you confirm your fabric order.

A comparison of knitted fabric materials should keep the intended garment and care requirements consistent. State the exact fibre percentages and confirm whether a branded fibre or certification claim is part of the brief. Review physical samples for the approved handle, appearance and stretch rather than assuming that a composition name guarantees a particular result.

When requesting knitted fabric materials in bulk, identify the construction and finished specification alongside each blend. Include the quantity by colour, the intended decoration and any matching components. The quotation can then be reviewed against a material brief that covers both your purchasing needs and the garment factory's requirements.

For material-claim background, see Textile Exchange standards. Confirm which current standard and documentation apply to the material you request.

How to shortlist knitted fabric materials

Begin with the end use and the performance you need to evaluate. Softness, drape, stretch recovery and surface appearance are properties of the finished fabric, so fibre composition alone is not a complete specification. Compare knitted fabric materials in a suitable construction and finish before deciding which sample to approve. Use the material categories here to organise your brief and identify the comparisons worth making.

Record percentages and naming requirements

State the complete fibre composition rather than using a general blend name. If elastane is required, include the target percentage and explain the stretch behaviour your garment needs. If a branded fibre or certified material is required, identify it by its correct name and request the applicable documentation. The quotation should make clear which material has been proposed, which details require approval and whether an alternative composition is being offered.

Compare finished samples consistently

Review candidate materials against the same end-use requirements. Check the intended face, finished GSM, usable width, handle and any agreed wash or performance results. Keep comments specific enough for a technical team to act on, such as a change in weight or recovery, instead of relying only on descriptions such as softer or better. For recurring orders, retain the approved article reference and note any acceptable variations in the written specification. This gives subsequent purchases a consistent starting point.

Retain an approved material reference

Keep the selected sample and its article specification accessible to the people placing repeat orders. If an alternative yarn or composition is proposed later, review it as a change rather than assuming it is identical. Note which performance results and material documents need to be checked again before the new version is approved.
